98000 Reasons: Preventing Medical Errors & Fighting Tort Reform

in Medical Malpractice

The American Association for Justice (“AAJ”) has taken steps to raise awareness of the dangerous effect of medical errors, to instill an understanding in individuals and Congress about the value of medical malpractice litigation, and to fight tort reform. The AAJ has launched a website, http://www.98000reasons.org, in hopes that visitors will use it to tell Congress to “put patients first.”

The website reports that the sixth leading cause of death in the United States is preventable medical errors claiming 98,000 deaths every year.

The website advises that trial attorneys have first-hand knowledge of the impact medical errors inflict on patients; and as medical malpractice litigation attorneys ourselves, we couldn’t agree more. It advises that the best way to prevent medical malpractice litigation is to prevent medical errors. The website displays videos of injured patients and those who have lost loved ones due to medical negligence.

The website offers visitors the opportunity to sign an electronic petition that will be sent directly to the Senate urging them not to use “medical tribunals” or special medical malpractice courts because that would deny litigants their right to a jury trial. The petition argues that attempting to limit “an injured patient’s right to their day in court should be voted down.”

The petition urges Congress to focus on patient safety instead. The petition strongly states, “Under NO circumstance, does medical malpractice tort reform belong in the health care reform bill.” If you or someone you love has been the victim of medical malpractice, visit http://www.98000reasons.org and let your voice be heard.
