As Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys we know motorists come across at least a dozen of these on a daily basis.  More than likely you can’t make it out of your own neighborhood with out hitting at least one.  It would probably surprise you– or maybe it wouldn’t– to know that most people either don’t know or don’t follow the common etiquette– i.e. the proper rules at a STOP SIGN.  It’s ignoring these simple rules that often lead to serious injury auto accidents in Kansas City.

When approaching a stop sign, always make sure to come to a complete stop.  A partial stop, also called a rolling stop, can often lead to a citation from police but it can often mislead a pedestrian or bicyclist who are expecting cars to stop completely.  When navigating a 3-way or a 4-way stop sign intersection it is important to remember who has the right-of-way.  The general rule is the first car to stop is the first car to proceed through.  However, in a situation where more than one vehicle stops at about the same time, the rule is that the car on the left should allow the right-of-way to the vehicle to their far right.

Our experienced Kansas City Auto Injury Lawyers want you to be safe as a motorist and as a pedestrian.  Following the rules of the road, even something as simple as a stop sign can go a long way in preventing needless car accident injuries and fatalities.  We can all use a brush up on road safety to remember the ins and outs of driving that we may sometimes take for granted.  Distracted driving can be deadly.  Help keep our roads safe by practicing safe and attentive driving techniques and prevent pedestrian, bicyclist and child injuries.

Pedestrian Accidents Could be on the Rise During the Summer in Kansas City

in Auto Accidents, FREE Books, Pedestrian Accidents

At Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys, we know that summer is right around the corner and already with spring here and the weather getting better and better each day, there are going to be more and more pedestrians and bicyclists taking to the sidewalks and streets in order to stretch their legs and hopefully get some exercise.

A Kansas City man was killed crossing Chestnut Trafficway on Saturday night.  Police are investigating the pedestrian accident which happened around 10:00 p.m.

Our hope is that we can help protect as many of them as we can and the best way we feel we can do that is in prevention.  Pedestrian fatalities account for 11 percent of motor vehicle fatalities.  In fact, over 180,000 pedestrians were killed in motor vehicle accidents between 1975 and 2005.  These are scary numbers, especially when you consider that pedestrians comprise the second largest category of motor vehicle accident deaths following occupant deaths.  On average, a pedestrian is injured in a traffic accident every 8 minutes, which means a pedestrian is killed in a traffic accident every 111 minutes.

The experienced Kansas City Personal Injury Attorneys would like to remind all drivers in Kansas and Missouri to practice safe driving and keep your eyes on the look out at all times.  Pedestrians as well should always remember that even though you may have the right of way, the car coming may not see you, so always be aware of your surroundings.  Cross at proper designated crossing paths.  Always use the sidewalk when there is one.  Look both ways.  It might seem like obvious advice but it could end up saving your life.

If you or a loved one has suffered a serious injury as a pedestrian in an auto accident in Kansas or Missouri, you may be entitled to compensation for your losses.  Contact Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys to set up a free consultation to discuss your injury claim with one of our experienced Kansas City Pedestrian Injury Lawyers.

in Head Injuries

Everyone loves a roller coaster ride.  But as fun as they can be it is important to always follow the safety rules or something tragic can happen.  A fatal accident at a carnival at the Reliant Center in Houston, TX. could have traveling fairs and carnivals taking a deeper look at their safety practices.

A man fell from a roller coaster similar to this one in Houston, Texas and was killed.

A 28 year-old man was killed when he fell off a roller coaster ride at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo carnival last weekend.  Reports indicate the victim fell 28 ft. from the coaster car and landed on another man walking near the ride.  The fall victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.  So far no one knows how or why he fell but initial safety inspections revealed no problems with the ride.  It is the first such accident in the 38 year old history of the carnival.

The injured man on the ground was also taken to a hospital where he was treated for a broken ankle.

Carnivals, fairs and theme parks can be a fun and entertaining day for everyone of all ages, but the rules go for everyone.  If you’re not careful, you can suffer a serious injury even die in an accident.  These parks are supposed to be designed to be safe and not offer much of a chance of serious injury but it still happens.  Someone is always going to do something they shouldn’t be doing when they know they shouldn’t be doing it.

As Kansas City Personal Injury Attorneys, we hope you practice safe and smart decisions when you are out enjoying the spring and days of summer either at Worlds of Fun or Oceans of Fun or wherever you are taking the family for a vacation.  Certainly with spring upon us and summer right around the corner, there will be carnivals and fairs popping up all over Kansas and Missouri for weekend affairs.  Ride at your own risk, but be sure to be safe, stay seated and keep your safety belt or lap bar in place at all times.

Three Killed in Train-SUV Collision in Washington; Stop, Look and Listen at all Railroad Crossings

in Auto Accidents

Stop, look and listen at rail road crossings. Collisions with trains can be fatal.

At Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys, we know from experience that  auto accidents in Kansas and Missouri can have deadly consequences.  Getting hit by another vehicle in a collision can put a dangerous amount of stress on your body and can cause serious injury even death.  However when a vehicle is hit by a train, the chances for catastrophic, serious injury and death all increase greatly.  An fatal accident in Kelso, Washington last week put that risk in the spotlight.

Three people were killed and another victim suffered critical injuries in a tragic train-SUV collision in Kelso, Waschington last week.  The fatal train accident happened at a private crossing near Highway 5.  The collision tossed the SUV into a ditch, killing three passengers and dealing catastrophic injuries to a fourth.  All four victims were rail road workers on their way to Vancouver, Canada.  The Burlington Northern-Santa Fe is investigating the crash.

As experienced Kansas City Auto Accident and Injury Lawyers, we know all too well the fatal consequences that can result from a dangerous collision between a car and a train.  Trains are bigger.  Cars and even SUVs don’t stand a chance against a powerful machine such as a train.  Never attempt to cross a train track while the signal lights are flashing and the arms are down blocking your path.  It can be unwise to try and gauge the speed of the oncoming train, coupled with trying to weave through the barricade.

If you have been involved in an auto accident in Kansas or Missouri and have suffered from serious injury as a result?  Let us help.  Call experienced Kansas City Personal Injury Attorneys James Roswold and Heather Lottman.  With over 15 years of experience in Auto Accident and Injury cases including Train Accidents, we may be able to help you and your family get through this difficult and stressful time.

Spring Tips for Avoiding Serious Injury Pedestrian and Bicycle Accidents in Kansas City

in Auto Accidents, Child Injuries, Head Injuries, Pedestrian Accidents, Safety Issues

According the U.S. Department of Transportation, over 630 people were killed in bicycle accidents in the United States in 2009, many right here in Kansas and Missouri.  The number of injuries is also staggering, over 50,000 injuries.  The same report indicates that the average age of victims is 39, child injuries made up 13% of the totals.  No surprisingly, urban areas (70%) see the most bicycle and pedestrian accidents but that’s only because more people + more automobiles= a greater chance for serious injury accidents.

Most bicycle and pedestrian accidents happen between 4 and 8 p.m., which is the typical drive home time for Kansans.

It’s no secret that bicycle and pedestrian safety is a concern for our experienced Kansas and Missouri Auto Accident and Injury Lawyers.  While it is easy to blame motorists for the accidents, we strongly believe fault lies with pedestrians as well as the motorists themselves.  We’d like to encourage all pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists alike to always be sure you are watching out for the other.   As a pedestrian, never attempt to cross a street, assuming the drivers are aware of your presence.  Remember that distracted driving is the cause of nearly all serious injury auto accidents.

All motorists need to do a better job of keeping their attention on the road.  Pedestrians and bicyclists are far more vulnerable to serious injury and death in the event of an accident with an automobile.  However, motorists tend to depend on the pedestrians to be watching out for them.  If both pedestrians and motorists are assuming the other is paying attention, that means no one is doing the safe thing.  Watch our for each other and share the road.

If you or a loved one has suffered a serious injury as a pedestrian or a bicyclist in Kansas or Missouri, you or your family may be entitled to compensation for your losses, including lost wages, medical bill and even legal fees.  Don’t go it alone, call experienced Kansas City Personal Injury Attorney James Roswold.  With over 15 years of experience in Auto Injury Accidents including Pedestrian and Bicycle Accident related injury, we may be able to assist you through this difficult time.

Are Kansas City Motorists at Risk of Serious Injury because of Your Car’s Keyless Ignition?

in Auto Accidents, Defective Products & Products Liability, Safety Issues

At Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys, we have blogged on Carbon Monoxide poisonings before but this offers a new twist.  Carbon monoxide poisoning is one of the leading causes of accidental death and we have been urging families in Kansas and Missouri to purchase a carbon monoxide detector for their or home.  This dangerous gas can cause death after prolonged exposure to the gas known as the ‘silent killer’.

Worrying about home is one thing, but now you have to worry about your vehicle, especially if it has a remote keyless ignition.  What is viewed as another miracle of modern technology now has auto makers concerned it could be killing people.  Cars with keyless ignitions tend to run quieter and its causing drivers to leave their cars running, which in an enclosed space that leaves time for a build up of carbon monoxide with can seriously injure or even kill someone after prolonged exposure.

Remote keyless ignitions are under scrutiny as a possible cause of fatal carbon monoxide poisoning.

Since 2009 there have been 3 deaths linked to carbon monoxide poisoning caused by defective keyless ignitions.  Another victim has filed a lawsuit against the Toyota Motor Corp.

The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include shortness of breath, dizziness, irritability, nausea and vomitting.  Prolonged exposure the poison gas can cause mental confusion, difficulty seeing and seizures, to name a few.  It is important to educate yourself on the dangers of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning.  Protect yourself and your family by being prepared.

Our experienced Kansas City Accident and Injury Lawyers we know protecting your family is your number one priority.  Carbon Monoxide is a deadly gas that can not be detected by taste or smell by human senses.  That’s why it is so important to get a CO detector for your home.  They can be purchased at local stores such as Target or Wal-Mart and range anywhere from $20-40.

If you or someone you love has suffered a serious injury as the direct result of an accident in Kansas or Missouri, you may be entitled to compensation for your losses.  Call Kansas City Personal Injury Attorneys James Roswold and Heather Lottman.
